What it really costs to take payments online in Armenia

The fee depends on the card, not on the bank. Here is what each bank publishes, what the regulator's new cap does and does not cover, and what the same sale would cost through Stripe or a merchant of record.

Every Armenian bank that publishes a grid prices by the same three kinds of card, and the gap between the kinds is usually bigger than the gap between banks.

The local scheme. Cheapest, because the money never leaves Armenia's own network.

The ordinary Armenian debit card. The international scheme's fee is added on top of the local one.

Visa / Mastercard from abroad

A card issued outside Armenia. Cross-border interchange makes it the most expensive tier at most banks; Ameriabank charges it the same 2.7% as an Armenian Visa.

The regulator's cap — and why it does not cover you online

On 9 February 2026 the Central Bank of Armenia capped card commissions for businesses with annual turnover up to ֏150M: at most 0.5% on ArCa cards and 0.9% on Visa and Mastercard, in force from 1 March 2026.

1.5–3.5%Online (vPOS) — where you are

The cap applies to physical POS terminals — the device on the counter. Every bank tariff sheet that implements it says so, and every bank keeps its online (vPOS) rates in the 1.5–3.5% range alongside the capped POS column. If you sell online — a subscription, a course, an app — you are on the uncapped rates below. Most founders have seen the “0.5% / 0.9%” headline and assume it applies to them. It does not, unless your bank agrees to it in your contract; it is worth asking.

Ameriabank: Edition 9 of its terms, in force since 27 April 2026, publishes these rates "unless otherwise agreed". Its third tier is any Visa or Mastercard from a bank outside ArCa, issued abroad or not, at the same 2.7% as an Armenian one. Online or phone consulting with no face-to-face meeting planned is capped at ֏50,000 a payment.

Evocabank: "May vary by sector and turnover." QR payments 1%. A non-standard payment-page design costs ֏20,000 once.

Inecobank: Individual agreements possible. Ronda's connection to Inecobank is not yet confirmed.

IDBank: Within the range, the rate depends on monthly turnover. New internet-acquiring customers pay no commission for the first 3 months. Payout times are from its Service Rules for accepting cards (in force 15 April 2024, §27), read 27 September 2026.

Ardshinbank: The published grid is for POS terminals (the lower figure is for the bank's own cards); the vPOS rate is agreed in the contract and is usually in the same range.

Armeconombank: Opens a dram account for the vPOS free of charge. May close a vPOS that turns over less than ֏1M in 180 days.

Converse Bank: Its own e-commerce page (re-read 27 September 2026) names ArCa, Visa and Mastercard cards and publishes no rates, payout times or settlement currencies.

Ronda is software that connects to the online-payments account your bank issues you; it is not affiliated with any bank. Rates are quoted from the banks' own pages on the date shown and may have changed — your contract is the number that counts. Know a published rate we are missing? Tell us and we will add it with its source.

Ronda or Stripe, sale by sale

Who pays you, with which card, through which Stripe account, and how big the sale is — every combination that changes the answer. Each cell is the share of the sale you pay in fees: an Armenian bank plus Ronda on top, Stripe below — including turning Stripe's dollars or euros into dram at the bank's rate (0.69% on dollars, 1.69% on euros), because the bank side already arrives in dram. The cheaper one is green.

Subscriptions

Stripe adds 0.7% for Stripe Billing on every subscription payment. Ronda has no separate subscription fee.

Top: bank + RondaBottom: StripeGreen is the cheaper one

An Armenian customer is cheaper through Ronda at every size, for a subscription or a one-off, on either Stripe account.

Usually by half or more. On an ArCa card there is no Stripe option at all. Small payments are where Stripe hurts most: its fixed 30¢ alone is more than 5% of a ֏2,000 sale.

A foreign customer is closer. Stripe wins when the card is domestic to the Stripe account — a US card on a US account, a European card on a European one — mostly on one-off sales above roughly ֏8,000–20,000. The reason is the bank, not Ronda: an Armenian bank charges about 3% on any foreign card, while that card costs Stripe the least. A foreign card from anywhere else is cheaper through Ronda.

And every cell leaves out the company. Stripe does not serve Armenia, so it needs one abroad — at the cheapest, a Delaware LLC through Stripe Atlas: $500 to form it, then about $799 a year (registered agent $100, Delaware tax $400, the Form 5472 filing a foreign owner must make every year from $299 — miss it and the penalty is $25,000). Plus a wire home for each payout. On a small business that is several percent on its own.

The bank rates are Evocabank's published grid, and the conversion is Ameriabank's published non-cash rates; Stripe's are its list prices, read 25 September 2026, priced in the account's own currency — price in dram and Stripe adds 1% (US) or 2% (EU) more. Not counted on the bank side: a monthly minimum where one applies (Evocabank: ֏3,000 under ֏200,000 a month). Foreign cards carry one more unknown: their approval rate on Armenian acquiring is not published by anyone, and we measure it rather than promise it.

04

What the same sale costs from abroad

The alternative to an Armenian bank is a company somewhere Stripe operates, or a merchant of record that sells on your behalf. Their published prices, read 25 September 2026.

RouteDomestic cardForeign card / currencyWhat it needs
Stripe (US entity)stripe.com/pricing2.9% + $0.30+1.5% for a non-US card, +1% if the currency is converted, +0.5% for a card typed in by handa US company, a registered agent, US accounting, and bringing dollars home

The honest reading: for an Armenian customer, a local bank plus Ronda is about 3%–3.4% all-in on Evocabank's grid, and no foreign processor can take an ArCa card at all. For a foreign customer it depends on where their card is domestic — the table above has every case.

05

What your bank's contract will also say

From Ameriabank's internet-acquiring terms (edition 9, in force since 27 April 2026); the other banks agree where they speak at all. These are the rules that matter for a subscription business.

Money arrives in up to 5 banking days, net of the fee

Not instantly, and not in full. Ameriabank transfers within 5 banking days of the processing centre confirming the transaction, with its fee already taken. IDBank publishes 2 working days for ArCa cards and 5 for international ones; Armeconombank, 1 banking day after ArCa's settlement file. Plan cash flow on the slow number. When does my money actually arrive? →

Prices to Armenian customers must be in dram

You may bill a customer abroad in USD or EUR if your bank offers it, but a transaction inside Armenia is in AMD, and the website must show its prices in dram. Ronda's checkout prices in dram. The currency rules, in plain words →

A free trial has rules

The page must state the first-charge date, that the card will be charged unless cancelled, how to cancel, and the refund procedure — and you must email the customer at least seven days before the trial ends, with the charge and how to cancel. Visa's own rules ask the same. Ronda's checkout shows all of it and sends the reminder seven days ahead; for a trial of a week or less, the sign-up email carries the same facts.

Recurring charges need recorded consent

The bank lets you charge a saved card without the customer present only because they agreed to regular charges. That consent line on the checkout is a contractual requirement.

A chargeback is your loss

The bank can hold a disputed amount for up to six months and debit a confirmed chargeback from your accounts. It may also ask for a guarantee deposit, depending on your business. Keep delivery records; Ronda keeps the payment trail.

Some businesses have a cap per payment

Ameriabank caps a single payment at ֏50,000 for consulting by phone or online when no face-to-face meeting is planned, and for donations; ֏300,000 for luxury goods. If you sell online lessons or coaching above that, ask the bank whether it applies to you.

Saved-card charging is switched on per merchant

Card binding is enabled on your contract at your request, and you carry the risk of charges made without 3-D Secure afterwards. Ask for it when you apply; we help you word the request.

06

Foreign cards and currency, honestly

Three different costs hide under “international”. A foreign card paying a dram price costs you the bank's foreign-card tier: 2.7% at Ameriabank, about 3% elsewhere. The customer's own bank converts and may add a foreign-transaction fee of up to about 3% on their side, even when the price is in dollars. A price in USD or EUR is allowed only for customers outside Armenia, and only where your bank offers it: Ameriabank's terms allow the foreign currencies it offers, and IDBank offers a separate foreign-currency vPOS for cards issued abroad. What none of them publishes is the rate when a dollar sale lands in a dram account, so ask whether a USD account avoids conversion altogether. Approval rates for foreign cards on Armenian acquiring are not published anywhere; Ronda logs every decline reason, so once you are live you will know yours.

The law on currency, who converts at each step, and a $20 subscription worked five ways: Selling abroad from Armenia. When the money reaches you, bank by bank: When does my money actually arrive?
